High Definition DVD The high definition DVD (HD-DVD) was a format that was recently in competition with the blue ray disk. However, in February 2008, Toshiba officially announced that they would no longer be supporting the high definition DVD, thus ending the competition between blue ray and high definition DVD. The high definition DVD is similar to the DVD as it uses very similar technologies. However, the laser used is much thinner and therefore you could store up to 15GB per layer, meaning you could store a maximum of 30GB on one disk. Blue ray had the advantage here, with being able to store 50GB of data.
Even though the high definition dvd is no longer supported, there are still many shops that sell high definition players and high definition dvd's. Do not be tempted to buy them. Why? well in less than a few months time, everything high definition DVD related will be removed from shelves and no longer available for purchase. Even the official high definition DVD website has been shutdown. As for the moment, only 2 more high definition DVD's are going to be released this year. You are wasting your money if you buy one, so don't fall for this trap. However they do still play DVD's, therefore you could pick up a cheap high definition DVD player and use it to upscale DVD's. But don't expect to be able to buy high definition DVD's in a few months time, as you won't find them anywhere for sale apart from places such as ebay and amazon. As for the moment, if you are looking into watching high definition content, you will need to consider buying a blue ray player or subscribing to a high definition tv service, rather than using high definition DVD. |
